The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
