Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
