EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
