Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism made him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
