Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the exact type of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
